International Boarding School

Ten questions for our notable alumnus Manuel Bernardo

1) What have you been up to since you left Rosenberg?

After Rosenberg I started my studies at the Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne. I successfully graduated from EHL in summer 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in international hospitality management. During my studies I completed many different internships, in multiple companies and positions that just assured me of wanting to go ahead in the hospitality industry. After my studies at EHL I accepted a job as Sales Manager back in St.Gallen at the Einstein St.Gallen. However, now, 1 ½ years later I am moving to a new position at The Alpina Gstaad in the Bernese Oberland. I am still single and plan to succeed in my career first. I would like to achieve my goals before spending time on family plans.

2) What was the best thing about your time at Rosenberg?

Is there always something you title as best? I believe the whole experience in this very special environment was “the best” thing about my time at Rosenberg. I enjoyed many small occasions, such as the funny but exhausting trainings for the annual Rosenbergball or unique moments with friends trying to outsmart the night-watchman. Furthermore I benefited from our city trips and ski days. Also, the connections we made and the friendships that we still hold up make it the best!

3) Which is your favourite city?

Baden-Baden. My family comes from there and I have always been able to spend a lot of time in this beautiful town. Also thanks to two Rosenberg friends who are from Baden-Baden it is always a pleasure to come back.

4) What is your favourite spot to hang out?

Lech am Arlberg, skiing, celebrating and enjoying the slopes and mountains.

5) Which place that you have never been to, is on top of your list to visit?

Iran. My best friend (also met at Rosenberg) is from there and I have heard so many things about this beautiful country. Its rich culture has always fascinated me. Unfortunately, the political situation is quite unstable at the moment and therefore I will need to postpone those plans.

6) Looking back at your own school time, what advice do you have for current Rosenberg students?

Enjoy Rosenberg as much as possible. Even though sometimes it might be strict and teachers might seem unfair, nothing will ever be as good as growing up with your friends in such a safe and beautiful place. Also never forget your friends and all the people you meet. You never know what they will help you with in the future.

7) Which person inspires you?

Several people. Mostly those that have set new standards, moved or reinvented something in the hospitality business. As an example, Cesar Ritz inspires me due to his continuous will to build the best hotels worldwide. John Jacob Astor, who has introduced standards that are still found in the best luxury hotels nowadays, inspires me. Several other hoteliers that accepted challenges throughout and could deal with situations that seemed lost from the beginning and succeeded also inspire me.

8) What is precious to you?

My friendships that I can hold up over years as well as the loyalty from and to my friends that we can hold up no matter what happens.

9) What are your projects for the future?

Starting my new job now, I will hopefully be able to move up so I can reach my goal to become a director by the age of 30. After that I will have to see whether I want to move around in the position as director or prefer to go back into a corporate office of a luxury hotel chain. However, I will always be open for new inspirations throughout my journey.

10) Complete this sentence: "To learn to live is…“

To learn to live is to be able to handle unexpected situations and to keep going forward no matter what happens.
